There's a tug of war going on between tech companies and governments at the moment around customer privacy. 

Google being asked to hand over foreign users data because it was able to access it in the US - even though it is stored abroad was interpreted to mean that it falls under US jurisdiction. 

Which is all well and good until one starts examining the other side of the coin and we have governments ranging from China to Russia, from Egypt to Uzbekistan, all seeking customer data from around the world.
