Whoever was behind the hacking of the now French president is a topic that will likely be pondered over for years.
However, the techniques used to deter the hackers were not something new. Creating false data and accounts purely for the purposes of confusing and stalling the hackers was an easy and cheap technique to thwart the attacks.
Similar to how honeypots are used to draw would-be-attackers away from live systems and spend their time targeting dummy systems.
“We created false accounts, with false content, as traps. We did this massively, to create the obligation for them to verify, to determine whether it was a real account,” Mr. Mahjoubi said. “I don’t think we prevented them. We just slowed them down,” he said. “Even if it made them lose one minute, we’re happy,” he said.
